Fantasporto 09 - the First Day
Better late than ever right?
My first day on Fantasporto this year was on the friday of the Oficial Competition start, back in 20/02.
Me and my loving half went for two soft ones to start with. The first one was:
Belini e o Demônio, a brazillian movie starred by the telenovela's actor Fabio Assunção. In one line: Its a rich samba version of the classic The Ninth Gate. It delivers! There's a interesting plot going around a lone drunkard private eye with an odd job to finish. Sadly we screened the movie on Rivoli Pequeno Auditorio, which is a small room, and you end up feeling like watching a movie at home, but with poorer lightning and louder sound that will make you go crazy during the projection. After a while you adapted to the conditions - euphemism for getting considerably deafer at the end of a movie than you were at the beggining of the projection.
I recommend this one, very nice touches on the direction, a good leading role and a mad trip into the dirty brazil makes it worth a buy/rent!
Three spooks out of Five!
The second pick of the night was a world premiere:
Samurai Avenger, a japanese production filmed in the sunny california by the Japanese actor, writer, director, caterer? Kurando Mitsutake. It probably doesn't strikes you familiar but he showed up as Oshi, the fashion elite japanese guru with a thing for round and white things in Ugly Betty, 1st season and, according to IMDB, as White Beard in the new millenium tv classic: Heroes, 2nd season - Japanese warlord that Hiro as to stop in the 17th century feudal Japan. Its hommage to the Japanese manga essays on the feudal Japan. The protagonist is Blind Wolf (Lone Wolf and Cub), a duh blind man looking for revenge for his murdered family during a nice picknick outdoors(Punisher!). by a deranged sex deviant Mob Boss ... He has to tackle seven assassins and the mob boss (eight devils of Kimon - Ninja Scroll), in a boring hour and half slashing. It has well achieved moments but is spoiled by excessive runtime for such a poor ripped story, that is ocasionally stopped to explain the scared viewer some detail on "how to break your opponnents sword". The gory beggining putted hope in our hearts but it went down hill from there.
The lone, jet lagged Kurando was the only member of the "Samurai Avenger Comittee" present at fantas and it was probably him the only factor that stole some shy claps at the end of the movie. He present himself behind a pair of black shades, died hair and a big heart to the Fantas fans that were witnessing the first screening. Better luck on next movie Kurando!
